Another Blessing Bowl Sketch ~ Asian Style Brush Painting

Welcome to our Sunday/Monday post with sketchers and photographers. The above photo is part of a series of 'Blessing Bowls' that I am doing for the Sketch Project 2013. In this sketch book I will also be incorporating some of my haiku.

'Blessings Bowls' Asian Style Brush Painting
(source from 'blessing bowl concept came from this theory below)

The begging bowl, or alms bowl, is one of the simplest but most important objects in the daily lives of Buddhist monks. It is primarily a practical object, used as a bowl in which to collect alms (either money or food) from lay supporters.
But it also has symbolic significance associated with the historical Buddha. According to one legend, when he began meditating beneath the Bodhi Tree, a young woman offered him a golden bowl filled with rice, thinking he was the divinity of the tree. He divided the rice into 49 portions, one for each day until he would be enlightened, and threw the precious bowl into the river.
This and other legends, combined with its humble monastic uses, have made the simple begging bowl a symbol of the Buddha's teachings on nonattachment.
The Vinaya states that monks may use bowls made of either iron or clay, and they can be either small, medium, or large.
The word for begging-bowl in Pali is patta; in Sanksrit it is patra.(wikipedia)

The photo below is another wonderful sky on Cape Ann MA. The sky this summer has just been amazing. This photo was taken at one of our outdoor band concerts held Sunday evening. I am always awed by the incredible 'delights' that nature brings to our eye. Hope you are enjoying them also.

  32. dear carol,
please forgive my late arrival. the weekend has been filled with harvesting the garden and all the traditional preparations for ensuring the bounty of this summer will last through the fall.
as i can, freeze, dry, and cook with this summers harvest i am smiling at buddha throwing the begging bowl into the water saving just enough to sustain him until enlightenment. i seem to be preparing for a much longer period of study!
thanks for being here and sharing you beauty!

  39. Lovely soft focus macro, Carol. End of summer gifts. Last year I participated in a special evening to feed the hungry. Pottery students made bowls at a local college, you "bought" a bowl by contributing to a local food pantry and then had a simple meal of beans, bread and water with others. I still keep the bowl out where I can see it.

In our area we're finally getting some beautiful skies instead of haze. Yesterday a pink sunrise. Fall!
